Changes to Excise Tax for Households from January 1, 2025

Starting January 1st 2025, changes to excise tax rates for natural gas come into effect.

According to amendments to the Law on Excise Tax, natural gas used in for house heating, water heating or cooking, will be subject to an excise tax rate of €0.00380 per kWh from January 1st 2025. The previous rate was €0.00165 per kWh.

What does this mean?
For instance, if a household consumes 1,000 kWh per month, the excise tax bill will increase by €2.15, totaling €3.80 instead of €1.65 was in 2024.

These changes are part of national efforts to ensure more sustainable energy resource usage and promote a greener transition.

How to reduce the tax impact?
We encourage households to review their energy consumption habits:
• Use heating systems efficiently and regulate indoor temperatures.
• Consider investing in energy-efficient appliances or improving home insulation.

The new excise tax rate will be reflected in bills received in February 2025.

More information on the changes is available on the State Revenue Service website and in the Law on Excise Tax.
