Balticconnector – the Baltic gas market is open

On 1 January 2020, the Estonian-Finnish natural gas interconnector Balticconnector, a bidirectional gas pipeline that connects the natural gas infrastructures of both countries, has entered into commercial use.

Balticconnector is part of a single natural gas market infrastructure that connects gas transmission system operators in Finland, Latvia and Estonia. The pipeline will improve the local safety of the gas system and will ensure the use of LNG and biogas. This will therefore allow the harmonisation of natural gas transmission tariffs at the national borders and eliminate the cross-border gas transmission tariffs.

The 77 km long underwater span of the pipeline from Inkoo, Finland to Paldiski, Estonia is linked with a 21 km long land pipeline in Finland and 55 km long land pipeline in Estonia. The total transmission capacity of Balticconnector is up to 72 GWh a day. The launch of the new interconnector is an important step towards the creation of a unified gas market of the European Union.
