At the forum, Jānis Kalējs, Head of the Wholesale Department of Latvijas Gāze, presented the challenges that natural gas traders have had to face since the Finnish-Estonian-Latvian single natural gas market was created on 1 January 2020.
As Jānis Kalējs pointed out, the creation of a single natural gas market has been a great achievement and an example not only at a regional level, but in the whole of Europe. At the same time, there have been quite serious challenges related to the technical capacity of the transmission system and the physical flow of natural gas towards the Finnish market. As stated by a LG representative, although creating the market has been a major step forward, in the future there is still an opportunity to improve communications between institutions, transmission system operators and system users (traders) to further improve market activity and close the gap between regulative requirements and market needs.
Forum participants that shared their experience include natural gas transmission operators Elering, Conexus Baltic Grid and Amber Grid, natural gas traders Latvijas Gāze, Ignitis Latvija, Baltic Energy Partners, as well as representatives of the regulatory institutions.
