With the support of Latvijas Gāze, 2,000 birches have been planted, compensating for the company's CO2 emissions

Environmental responsibility means not only goals and policies, but also real actions, so a tree stand has been planted with the support of the company, which will help reduce harmful CO2 emissions for many years to come.

Feeling responsible for its impact on the environment, Latvijas Gāze is involved in various green initiatives. One of these measures is participation in a project that can neutralise greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the offices and employees of Latvijas Gāze. 2,000 birches planted with the support of Latvijas Gāze will compensate for the CO2 emissions generated by the company in 3.4 years.

“Calculations have been made and it has been established that the main sources of GHG emissions of Latvijas Gāze are heat, electricity, and transport. To neutralise the situation, in October of this year, in cooperation with Not Hot Environmental Solutions, we have planted 2,000 birch trees, which will compensate the emissions generated by the company over three years, absorbing 560 tonnes of CO2 emissions and releasing oxygen, thus making the environment greener. Birch seedlings are certified, and we chose birch as this species has few natural enemies and is high-quality wood that can be used for carpentry in the future. “The birch plantation is located in Valka region, it will be regularly maintained and will be protected for 40 years; it must not be cut down” said O. Ķiecis.

"It is well understood that CO2 emissions must be reduced, but too little is said about the need to change all of our habits. Climate change is happening because of all our actions; it is not just about companies or specific sectors. With the habits of society today, it will be very difficult to achieve the climate goals set. We cannot go by car to the nearest shop, go on holiday by air countless times, and expect climate problems to be resolved. Therefore, it is important not only to develop strategies and policies, but also to inform the public regarding the need for a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and change of habits,” explains Aigars Kalvītis, Chairman of the Board.
