According to the amendments to the “Excise Duty Law,” for natural gas used in households as fuel, including for water heating or cooking, an excise duty rate of €0.00595 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) will apply from January 1, 2026. Previously, the rate was €0.00380 per kWh.
What does this mean?
For example, if a household consumes 1000 kWh per month, the excise duty bill will increase by €2.15, and the total excise duty in 2026 will be €5.95 per month, compared to €3.80 per month in 2025.
How to reduce the tax impact?
We encourage households to review their energy consumption habits:
- Use heating systems efficiently and regulate indoor temperatures.
- Consider investing in energy-efficient appliances or improving home insulation.
The new excise tax rate will be reflected in bills received in February 2026.
More information on the changes is available on the State Revenue Service website and in the Law on Excise Tax.
