The conference, organised by Dienas Bizness on 11 May this year, brought together industry companies, experts and representatives of institutions to discuss the development of the energy sector in the coming years that should contribute to Latvia's energy security and independence.
Jānis Kalējs, Head of the Wholesale Department of Latvijas Gāze, spoke about the availability of natural gas as a resource in the next heating season, emphasising the need for new infrastructure: “When thinking about the amount of natural gas needed for the next heating season, we cannot look only at the consumption that Latvia needs; we must take into account the consumption of natural gas in the whole region - Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and with the opening of GIPL, also, Poland. Currently, the biggest problem is not the insufficiency of resources, but the lack of infrastructure for the use of LNG. The existing infrastructure does not have sufficient capacity to provide the region with the required amount of natural gas.”
During the presentation, Jānis Kalējs presented estimates to the audience of the amount of natural gas consumed in the region and gas flows at the beginning of May, as well as various possible scenarios that raise serious concerns about the availability of natural gas in the region in the coming months and next winter.
The conference “Energy” is an annual event organised by the Publishing house “Dienas Bizness”, which brings together industry leaders with the aim to discuss current issues and the most important issues for the sustainable development of the industry.
